2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Review

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe offers a mixture of right-sized power, efficiency and luxury that’s hard to beat. It’s a bit expensive but it delivers on all fronts.

It starts with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that’s matched with two electric motors for a combined 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. It’s backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission and a full-time four-wheel drive system with Selec-Terrain traction control.

Powertrain

If you’re looking for a versatile mid-size SUV that can tow, but also has a low-emission powertrain, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is worth checking out. Its plug-in hybrid powertrain delivers performance similar to the V-8 engine and vastly improves fuel efficiency.

The 4xe combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to two electric motors for 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a capable four-wheel drive system.

Once it has a full battery charge, the 4xe can travel up to 26 miles on electricity alone before the gas engine needs to be activated. That number can vary depending on how you use the three hybrid drive modes to preserve the electric motor’s power: Hybrid, Electric and eSave.

Technology

Jeep’s 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe combines two electric motors, a 400-volt battery pack and a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine to deliver 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels. The 4xe also has a 8-speed automatic transmission to deliver smooth and capable performance.

The 4xe is a plug-in hybrid that offers a mix of Hybrid, Electric and eSave drive modes to customize the SUV’s powertrain for driving conditions. The Hybrid mode determines how much gas to put into the vehicle based on your speed, while the Electric and eSave modes keep the SUV in a constant state of electric operation until the battery runs out or you floor the accelerator and use the gas engine for more oomph.

The 4xe feels high-tech, but could do with some fundamental improvements. For example, the main touchscreen on the center console is a 10.1-inch unit that has sharp graphics but is not intuitive to use.

Safety

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe has a wide range of safety features and functions to keep you safe on the road. It can also help you navigate in a variety of conditions, thanks to its lane keeping assist system and blind-spot monitors.

The 4xe’s low center of gravity makes for a smooth ride and responsive handling. It doesn’t feel heavy around sharp curves, and you don’t get the bouncy understeer that many hybrid SUVs suffer from.

In addition to safety, the 4xe has a lot of premium features and amenities that make it a great value. It comes with a standard Uconnect infotainment system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and SiriusXM satellite radio.

There are several trim levels to choose from, including Trailhawk, Limited, Overland, and Summit. The latter two offer a more luxurious interior and more safety features. The Overland model includes a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, hands-free power liftgate, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and perforated Nappa leather seats.

Interior

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is a plug-in hybrid SUV that offers a range of features and functions for both on-road and off-road driving. It also has a more luxurious interior than most midsize SUVs, with excellent materials used throughout its cabin.

The four-door, five-seat model is available in Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve trims. Its standard features include a Uconnect infotainment system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, LED lights, and a 4WD drivetrain.

Its upper-trim models include a McIntosh 19-speaker premium audio system, massaging front seats, and a rear entertainment system. Its interior also includes Nappa leather with matte wood accents on the steering wheel and dash, and a few piano black pieces around the cabin.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe’s hybrid drivetrain uses a regenerative braking system that provides power back to the gas engine when needed. It’s a welcome feature that helps reduce wear and tear on the brakes while lowering fuel usage.
