The 2018 Mazda CX-9 is already seen as one of the best family SUVs of the year and it is hard to argue with this assessment. We are looking at an SUV that has great handling for such a large crossover, a really easy access for the third row of seats and an interior that makes you feel as if you are in a premium vehicle. However, this does not mean there are no problems. In a poor road the ride will be stiff and the emergency braking system is a bit too aggressive. If you travel with a lot of luggage you will also not like what is offered.
New For The 2018 Model
In the new 2018 Mazda CX-9 you receive G-vectoring control and automatic emergency braking as standard features. G-Vectoring control activates when turning by reducing torque so car weight is shifted. This practically improves the steering response while increasing cornering force. After the steering wheel will unwind, the engine gets back full power, moving weight back to rear tires, increasing stability.
If you want heated second row seats, it is available in upper trim levels. Full safety tech active features are included in an extra optional package for the lower trim models.
2018 Mazda CX-9 Overview
You only get one engine, the 2.5 liters turbo four option, delivering 310 pounds per feet of torque and a good-enough 250 hp if using premium fuel. Engine is now paired with 6 speeds automatic transmission. This combo brings in a fuel economy of 22 – 28 for city – highway in FWD.
The 2018 Mazda CX-9 is pretty large but it is actually not the roomiest of the crossovers with three rows.
In the base CX-9 Sport trim you get 18 inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, keyless start, 7.0 inches touchscreen, cloth upholstery, Mazda Connect, 2 USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity and tri-zone climate control. In Touring you also get power driver seat, the touchscreen is larger, you get power liftgate and heated front seats. With Touring Premium you receive extra LED fog lights, a 12 speakers premium system, navigation, sunroof and parking sensors.
If you buy a Grand Touring model you receive all that is in Touring Premium but you also have 20 inch alloy wheels, adaptive headlights, heated steering wheel, roof rails and some pretty interesting extras. AWD is added in Signature, together with leather upholstery, LED grille lighting and even a special rosewood interior trim.
SUV Safety
Although the crash tests are not in, the 2017 model managed to get a Good rating on all the screening tests. CX-9 was always seen as a very safe SUV so we expect the same high quality included in the 2018 version. Standard security features are suitable for most drivers, with extras being available if you desire them. Active safety features that are optional but a good idea include lane departure warning, forward collision warning, lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot warning and distance recognition support.
Conclusions
The 2018 Mazda CX-9 is a really interesting family SUV that will surely be a top seller. What is particularly interesting is the fact we are looking at an interior that is very well-built. The third seats row is accessible and you do get enough room amount for adults seated there, although just for shorter trips.
