Ford Explorer went through a full redesign three years ago and added the 4 cylinder turbocharged option 2 years ago. The high performance trim levels and different comfort features were added in 2013 so it should come as no surprise that the Explorer XLT 2014 only has minor changes when compared with the previous model. There are currently rumors that a restyling will be done but we have to say that this is not necessary at the moment as we are looking at a pretty good SUV.
2014 Changes
This year’s changes for the 2014 Ford Explorer XLT are basically just on the comfort and cosmetic side. We have 2 brand new paint options and we see the addition of automatic headlamps and heated seats for the second row, something standard for Limited trim. Besides these modifications, we can say that the 2014 model is a carryover of the 2013 model.
Engine
The standard engine that is presented is the V6 2.5 liter that offers 6,500 rpm and 290 hp. It will give you a fuel consumption of 17-24 city-highway for the front wheel drive model. If you opt for all wheel drive, the consumption goes down by one on the highway. You can also opt for the EcoBoost 2.0 liter turbocharged model with 240 hp. The 3.5 liter V6 that you get on the Sport trim is not available with Ford Explorer XLT. Every engine includes 6 speed automatic, which includes the SelectShift system from Ford, one that gives access to manual shifting.
Interior
The cabin is quite stylish and includes quality materials. There are various standard features you will appreciate like the lumbar support for the driver, the great speaker system, the LCD color display for tachometer, speedometer and fuel, power locks and speed and audio controls on your steering wheels. You even get keyless entry, dual chrome exhaust and body-color spoiler. In AWD models you even get Terrain Management System and Hill Descent Control.
The 2014 Ford Explorer XLT has every single one of the base standard features plus heavy-duty rear and front brake calipers, chrome door handles, 18 inch aluminum wheels, LED signal indicators on heated mirrors, illuminated visors, SecuriCode keyless entry keypad, MyFord, Sirius Sattellite Radio and an entertainment system that has voice activated communication.
Conclusions
On the whole, the XLT trim of the 2014 Ford Explorer is great. The SUV has a great safety rating and you will definitely appreciate all the standard features offered plus the great driving experience that you receive.
